make sure that S V　「that以下を確認する/確かめる」


I want to make sure that the doors are locked before going out.

「出かける前にドアに全部鍵がかかっているか確認したい」


Please make sure that he is alone now.

「彼が今一人でいるか確認してください」



make sure of A 「Aを確認する/確かめる」


I just want to make sure of something.

「ちょっと確かめたいことがあるんだけど」


Let me make sure of it.

「それに関して確認させてください」



make if/whether S V　「〜かどうか確認する/確かめる」

  • Whether よりも if の方が交互的に使われる

  • that の場合の方が確かめる対象がおそらく事実だろうというニュアンスが強い


I want to make sure if she has free time this weekend.

「今週末彼女は時間があるかどうか確かめたい」


You should make sure whether you really want to study abroad.

「本当に留学に行きたいかどうかもう一度確認した方がいいよ」


make sure wh節　「wh節を確認する/確かめる」

  • wh節 = what / when / which / who / where など


I would like to make sure what time we will arrive in Tokyo.

「東京に何時に着くか確かめたいです」


We should make sure which one we have to choose.

「私たちはどっちを選ぶ必要があるか確認した方がいい」



POINTS

  • 日本語で「チェックする」と言いたい時は make sure で表現できる

  • 日常会話でめちゃくちゃ使う

  • フォーマルな場でも使える
